WHY WOULD THE STARTER SPIN BACKWARDS?.
I suppose it could be spinning backwards; I've never heard of this though (only 1 or 2 people have replaced the brushes AFAIK). Or maybe the sprag clutch (freewheel) is not engaging. if you're brave, you could reverse the starter leads or just hook them temporarily (<2 seconds) to a battery. The starters on my Cub Cadet 100 and 125 spin counter clockwise. (looking from driver seat / back side of starter) The delco starter should only spin one way. If it has a rebuilt starter, or an aftermarket starter, the previous owner could have had a clockwise starter installed, which would explain the problem you are having. Chris. Most mass market rebuilders rebuild the starter drive also. They grind back the teeth on the gear and of course the internal parts are of questionable quality. Sometimes there is as much as 1/16" or more of the original teeth cut back. Which can cause the starter to be spinning too fast before engagement making a nice grinding sound.

They're normal starters, they just engage the flywheel from the opposite direction. I have seen some reversible brush type motors that have the brushes on a carrier that can be rotated to change the timing. They shift the brushes about 40 degrees or so and that makes the motor run backwards. Did you rebuild the starter? I had this problem on my 90. If the housing on the starter is turned 180°, the magnets are flipped from the brushes and it WILL spin backwards! I pulled it back off the machine, rotated my cover 180° and whala, it was spinning correctly.. and has been since.

I have an old magnet hanging around the bench that had come from a motorcycle starter rebuild for years ago. Said magnet happens to match the radius of the VW starter. I set the bolt into the starter, attached the magnet behind it, greased the shaft and installed the starter, secured the lower 10mm nut and went up to put the nut on the long bolt. I took another look at the starter rotation last night just to be sure and I was wrong initially. When looking down the starter to toward the flywheel, the shaft spins clockwise. I called the guy in Charlotte who rebuilt the starter and he said it could be the fields or they put the wrong parts in it. Ive swapped the wires, when they are hooked up correctly positive on the starter it spins backwards. when you flip them and put the neg on the starter it spins like it should. as for the one way bearing i think you can only put in on one way.. i did look at that already. what i think it is, is when i got the frame powder coated i left the motor mounts powder coated. so what i.

The starter does spin when activated but turns the starter clutch backward(free spins). I verified that it does spin in the opposite direction as the starter on my 06 CRF250X. Manual states that you have to remove the jug to get the starter off, so I don't if I will undertake that option at this time as long as the kick starter fires it up.

For a little while now when I go to start my 8n it tries to turn just like normal, but just before it kicks over it frequently stops trying to turn over and the starter just spins. I release the ignition button and it stops spinning and then I try again. If I stick with it for a bit it will eventually catch and turn over. The only thing I can think of is the shop put the starter frame on backwards reversing the polarity of the permanent magnets attached to the starter frame. Go with an OEM starter and a rebuild kit. It is the best way to go. Normally only requires new brushes. The back plate needs to go back in the same place or the starter can spin backwards. So mark the plate to the housing.
